Completely coincidentially, a I was in Lockhart a couple of weeks ago, specifically to visit the famous BBQ where you eat off a piece of paper without forks. It's just as great as I thought. However, Lockhart itself seems a bit of too rural. I am struggling to find a local equivalent... Bakersfield, perhaps. Modesto is too mexicanized. Auburn and Placerville are as green, but they are more hippified. Anyhow, it's probably a nice place to retire, but not for active living -- unless you commute into an office in San Antonio or Austin once a week.
