I'm getting married... In Costa Rica :)

Post by Jamie Bond » Mon Jan 26, 2009 3:18 pm

I actually got engaged to my girlfriend a month ago, but better late than never on the announcement :D

We plan on getting married in Costa Rica. Why? Destination weddings are actually a lot cheaper (For those getting married, not so much for the guests).

We're still looking into resorts and details. Has anyone here been to Costa Rica that can make a recommendation?

Regarding recommendations, the biggest consideration will be what time of year you're planning on.

I lived in Guatemala for three years, but never made it to Costa Rica. A coworker here is a big surfer and has been going to Costa Rica for decades, and I've been asking him about it. Here's his latest:

There’s a ton of options, lots of towns and beaches, etc.

Rainy season depends on what part of country.

Arenal Volcano is another good option, not on the beach but beautiful area.

It really depends on what their looking for Are they hippies, are they conservative typical vacation folks, etc?

So in other words, nude beaches versus volcano.

Nude beaches > Volcanoes

Actually, for me personally. I would rather see volcanoes.

But for a wedding/honeymoon, beaches are the way to go I think.

Our limited research tells us most of our options are in the city of Liberia.

I suppose this is what is most important for this particular event:

* Decent selection of resorts (We need to be picky, as a large number of people will attending)
* Things to do for everyone who comes - Not just us, but for our guests with a variety of tastes and abilities.
* A nice beach setting is ideal for the event, I think.
* With the above in mind, I want to see more than just tropical beaches. Proximity to volcanos or something else that is interesting or unique about the country would be excellent.

I'll propose the idea of getting married on a volcano, but somehow I doubt she will go for it (But that would be awesome...)

1) Post a picture of the Hoty.
2) Be sure to visit Isla Nublar and to check out the large lizards that live there.

OK, here are a few suggestions, Jamie. First of all, most of the recommended places will be on the Pacific side, as the Caribbean side tends to be more...Caribbean in the vibe, more ganja-fueled, less Costa Rica.

Of all the places I talked to the guy about, Cabo Matapalo sounds like it'd be the coolest place for the wedding or at least the honeymoon. Not very touristy, on the edge of a rain forest preserve, lots of eco-lodges and stuff like that, beautiful beaches and such. Google turned up http://www.junglehouse.com/ as one of the first results, to give you an example.

Dominical is another really laid back and non-touristy kind of place, the naturalist paradise type thing.

Tamarindo, is pretty trendy, not quite as touristy as the main digs, not overrun by tourists but still kind of a hot spot.

Jaco, on the other hand, is very touristy, where you get all the casinos and stuff, so sometimes it's a question of guest consideration. I mean, do you want them to live it up in the tourist/casino hot spot or more of the naturalist area?

On the Caribbean side, you'd probably want to look at Puerto Viejo.

Hopefully this gives you a good starting point for googling and such.

I'm curious, Deacon, what were you doing in Guatemala for three years of your life? Peace Corp stuff?

By the way, there are like 50 others you could go to as well. That's just a small sampling.

We were in Guatemala and Mexico City because of my dad's job, ampersand. He's a DEA agent and at the time was in the air wing.
