Just saying to Nicola yesterday evening how ridiculously overblown babycare worry is and how people need to just grow the fuck up.
Of course, ten minutes later I looked into the crib and she was lying with her eyes kind of open and didn't appear to be moving and I have never gotten so frightened so quickly. She was quite put out when I grabbed her and woke her up.
Really after that there was little chance of sleep. Even if she was quiet. Which she wasn't. She'd hardly made a peep in her three days at the hospital but more than made up for that until four o'clock this morning when it dawned on us that maybe we should turn the light out. Result. Sleeping baby. Meant we couldn't stare at her for the rest of the night to see if she'd stopped breathing but still.

There we are: that's the dichotomy of babies so far as I can see: swooping joy and love coupled with pant-shitting terror.
