Eh, I don't think I could go. It would depend on the cost.

No, are you guys crazy? Why would I spend that kind of money on a super cheap week's vacation somewhere?

Absolutely not. I'm barely able to afford ramen right now.

The Gathering 2011: An Inquiry of Interest

Post by Lizzegirle » Mon Apr 18, 2011 9:23 pm

So it's getting close to summer and we haven't discussed the Gathering at all this year. Part of the reason for that is me, and not knowing when I might get pregnant. Well now that I'm knocked up and have a timetable, we've been discussing some less expensive options for this year's Gathering.

We all love visiting our home away from home in Outer Banks, but I think with this economy, not many of us would be able to make it due to costs. So we're thinking that this year we have the Gathering a little closer to home. Actually, it's A LOT closer to my home... in South Lake Tahoe.

What does this mean to you? Well first, the costs would be waaay cheaper for you guys. Greg and I wouldn't need any travel costs, and Jarrod's travel would be tiny compared to the cross-country trip that we usually take. I figure that probably saves you guys at least $1000 right there. Second, who wouldn't want a local tour guide of an area? I grew up there, so I can show you guys all sorts of things that you probably would miss on a regular vacation to Tahoe. Third, I have some connections up there, so I can (hopefully) get us some deals on a boat ride into Emerald Bay, or maybe some water toy rentals. Fourth, there are all sorts of things to do there. There are the casinos, the beach, hiking, fishing, boating, sight-seeing and a bunch of other things at our finger tips. Even though I grew up there, the sights are still some of the most breath-taking I've ever seen. Plus, who wouldn't want to see the place that made me into the awesome person I am today?

You guys would want to fly into Reno-Tahoe International airport, which would probably be cheaper for you to fly into than Norwalk, VA anyway. (Your mileage may vary.) So that may save some of your costs too. The distance to Tahoe is about an hour and a half, but it's a pretty drive. There are also a ton of shuttles that are willing to take you from the airport to the casinos up there for a very nominal fee. But arranging car rentals is also an option.

I'm not sure how much the house usually cost us in NC, but I've found some rentals that seem fairly reasonable at less than $3000 for 7 days and can sleep up to 16 of us. The size and price of the place will depend on how many people are wanting to attend. We might want a place with fewer beds or whatnot.

Tahoe also works out for Greg and myself. First, I'm not sure how I'm going to feel after giving birth to Harper. So staying close to home seems like a more comfortable option to me. Plus, I don't really relish the thought of traveling across country with a newb on my lap. Lastly, if we want to go out one night, there are some very excited family members up there that would be thrilled to watch her for a few hours. I don't necessarily love the idea of going on vacation to a place where I spent 20 years of my life and still have a lot of memories of, but I really would like to get everyone together again this year.

So I'm not exactly sure of the costs, because that's usually Jarrod's forte, but ROUGH estimate would be somewhere between $300 and $400. (For full segments and food. The cost would go down if we were to do partial segments, etc.) Like I said, that is a really rough number as I'm not the number cruncher. As I see what our interest is, we can start to see what the costs would be a little closer.

What I'm looking at for dates is early September or late August. Jarrod has a scheduling conflict for the middle of September and I really don't want to wait much longer than that because it gets cold very quickly up in Tahoe. I mean, they often get snow in October... so we don't want to wait until the end of October to do this. Labor Day weekend (and following week) might be a fun time to go as well because there are usually craft fairs and such going on. I dunno, I guess it's up to Jarrod and his schedule.

I think we'll start taking deposits in mid-May, just so we can finalize some of these things and I can put a deposit on a house. The deposit will be around $100 and won't be refundable unless we cancel the trip. If you decide you can't go at the last minute, then I'm really sorry, but we were all counting on you.

So post your thoughts and answer the poll. Thanks!

Tahoe is a LOT more do-able for me. But being summer in a Vegas casino, time off could be tricky. I'm in for 50% for a segment. For now...

I already have a week in Chicago and a week in Mexico planned this year, plus half a week in SoCal and holiday time in Oklahoma, so I have zero vacation time left. :| I'm already out of vacation time and I haven't even used it yet!

:shifty:

Joanna says we need an 'alone' vacation, but you can get a house with thick walls right? Perhaps maybe an abandoned bank with a vault remaining?

Hmm.. sounds kinky but I'm not sure Joanna will approve, maybe throw in unlimited anime viewing and zelda 24/7 and we may be able to convince her.

While I did say that, it doesn't necessarily mean that we can't do a gathering as well. :P

We might be able to come for a segment or a week. Personally I don't think its worth it to go if not for a full week. Of course it will depend on a lot of things, like flight costs and if we can get someone to watch Noah for that long. I would love to go but there are still a lot of factors that we would have to look into before committing.

Why not bring Noah? I'm bringing Harper. =) I might be able to get a babysitter one night if we want to have an adult night. =)

Well I wouldn't mind bringing Noah, but the question of children at the gathering was brought up a few years ago and not met with much enthusiasm. I wouldn't want to turn otherwise will participants away just because a child was coming... And Harper is slight different considering she will hopefully still be in your belly at the time. :)

Mav is totally f'ing down. Even if I decide I actually do hate all of you, it's a rather cost effective way for me to go hiking in Tahoe for a week straight. So definitely.

I hope she still won't be in my belly. She's due the end of July!

I mean, we can discuss it, but I always had the stance that Greg and I would eventually have kids and that we would need to bring said kids to the Gathering. Noah will be old enough that he doesn't cry as much. Harper will be up around the clock, but I'm hoping to put our room away from others so that she doesn't keep everyone up all night. (Just mommy and daddy. )

Frankly, we're all getting to the age where we have to let kids come or we're going to alienate a bunch of people. Plus, I know that Greg and I are dying to meet Noah as I'm sure several of the "regulars" are too. I don't think I could leave a one month old somewhere for a week anyway, so for this trip, I think we almost have to let kids come. If we don't then I think we'll have to cancel this trip and let someone else plan a gathering without Greg and myself.

Lol I couldn't remember when she was due. Well in that case I guess we would need to know if we will have to pay extra for Noah to come. He would probably just sleep on the floor of our room. Maybe put our room and your room next to each other and have a "family" wing. :)
