In Memoriam: A group for those forumites who have passed

Post by Martin Blank » Tue Jun 23, 2020 2:18 pm

I don't think it ever occurred to me, some 17 years ago, that we would have forumites who would leave not just Real Life Forums but also real life. News of Blaze's passing has made me think of how to handle that.

I have created a group called In Memoriam. It's not visible yet and it will be Admin-managed. But I would like to get suggestions on the description, username color, and custom rank and icon. Accounts in it will be deactivated (unless somehow there's an undesirable effect from that).

Also, if there are other forumites who have passed that should be in the group, please let me know.
If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there.

This warmed my heart to see. Thank you so much for doing this. RIP Blaze. You will not be forgotten.

This is a nice idea. I don't know what I'd have it look like. I wonder if it would be possible to have an old post from them. Something that just sums them up as a poster. I don't know how that would work though.
I've been remembering Blaze's posts since the news, and I remembered that he had the best sig trend image I remember on here for, IIRC, the 'Seven Deadly Sins' month. It was a litte...risque... though so perhaps best to leave it at that. He had a good sense of humour, did Blaze.

Description? How about "Remembering forumites who have permanently logged off."
Username Color? Maybe Grey or Copper colored?
Custom Rank? "Potential Zombie."
Icon? No idea, maybe we can commission someone to do it?
Yo Mav, I'm real happy for you and Imma let you finish but Hirschoff had the best sig trends of all time.

Hah, I loved his sense of humor! That would be perfect! I wish I knew how to quote my next response without double posting but alas, I don’t *facepalm* so sorry in advance!

I love the potential zombie! Haha! Also the idea of them logging off. Very creative! I can imagine Bill Murray chasing after them like in The Dead Don’t Die 😂

I think this is a wonderful idea. I love the suggestions too! Keeping the memories of those that have gone somewhere like this will show that they are not forgotten, and I really like that.

I like the copper name color. It doesn't fade into the background (the join date below everyone's name is grey, as an example) and evokes some permanence from the metal association, as well as copper memorials (without the green patina). I also like Seir's description idea.

Not sure I'm sold on the potential zombie title, though that may change. I'm not totally against it, just not totally for it.

I've activated the In Memoriam group. Blaze's username now appears in copper for any post, in his profile, and on the user list, as will anyone else added. I still have not selected a title or icon, and am still open to suggestions.

That's really nice, MB. And searching for Blaze's posts led to a very pleasant meander through some great old threads.

Is it a general icon/title? Or are you intending for individual ones?

It would be a title unique to group members, the same for each unless they already had a custom title.

One oddity possibly caused by this. If I click Blaze's username I get 'The requested user does not exist'.

That might have been due to the deactivation. I don't see that, but possibly because I'm an admin. I've re-enabled the account. Please try it again.

Yep, that seems to be it. It's odd that de-activating an account would hide it entirely instead of just disabling logins. I suppose it serves as more of a soft delete.

I'll change up the email address and password to protect the account. Thanks for helping on that.
