50 Shades.

Post by Dreamer » Mon Dec 07, 2015 11:57 pm

I'm just going to say it...

I've never read the books.

But I've seen the movie 3 times now.

*deep breaths*

Here goes...

I like it.

I think I get it. I don't think it's given the credit it may actually deserve.

Has anyone actually seen the movie?

I accept criticism from anyone, yes! But I think it would be pretty cool to hear from someone who's seen the movie. Not just figures they "get the gist" from other media or previews or "this one girl's twitter I read."

Seen the movie and liked it or seen the movie and hated it.

And, also, why?
My sig would have contained the secret of life, but I'd already clicked submit.

I haven't seen it. Hadn't planned to. The excerpts of the book I've read were horribly written. And the movie didn't really look all that captivating or great. If I'm going to jerk off to S&M, I don't need a story getting in the way or softcore censors working overtime. Besides, if they're not going to include the tampon scene, why even bother making the movie?

I have read the books and didn't understand ANY of the fuss over them. The dime a dozen romance novels my mom gets have way racier stuff in them (yes I read them once in a while I consider them sorbet/palate cleanser for my brain). They were not well written and just confusing at some points. The only reason I read them all was I kept hoping something was coming up that would explain all the fuss. I have not even remotely considered seeing the movies. Maybe waaay down the road if I am super bored sometime it might happen, but I'm with Deacon on letting a story get in the way haha.

It's the acceptable face of erotica, isn't it? The British media referred to it as 'Mummy Porn' which, come to think, actually sounds way more interesting than it is.
You'd see people on trains reading it in the morning, like a Harry Potter book. But the fuss it caused when I whipped out Cherry Pie...

I've had a stab at writing erotica before, and although it's not easy, the results pleased me if noone else. But strictly for *ahem ahem* research purposes I have read a fair bit and an awful lot of it is good, well-written and quality work. Which are not things I've seen levelled at FSoG.

It's a bandwagon, isn't it? The DaVinci Code was terrible, but pretty much every adult I know read it when it was the thing.

By the by, FSoG has its own official line on sex-toys now. You can't fight synergy. It's bigger than all of us.

Most of the fuss was that this made erotica sociably acceptable instead of something you did on your own in the privacy of your own room. The book? It was showing up in book clubs and being discussed out in the open. Mothers were reading it and it was socially acceptable for them to giggle about how steamy and hot it was.

On the other hand, part of the fuss was about how badly it portrayed BDSM relationships, and that worried a lot of the BDSM community when the books became more mainstream. It portrayed their relationships as nothing more than abuse, and that's not something that's true in the BDSM community. They hate the books not because they think porn is wrong, but because they're worried it's going to give people the idea that abusive relationships on that scale are acceptable, and someone could get seriously hurt.

The fanfiction community in general hates the books because they're poorly written trash. There's actually some very well written fanfiction out there, and while not all of it is porn, a lot has much better written porn. Based on better original works. Because, let's face it, the Twilight people aren't exactly going to win any contests against James Bond any time soon.

I fixed it for you. To claim abusive relationships can't or don't happen with BDSM fans is as silly as suggesting that 50 Shades is anything more than uninformed and terribly written garbage.

The movie wasn't horrible. I got through book two and then decided I wanted to bash my head into the wall so onwards to something else instead. I can tell it's fanfiction, but if I close my eyes and try really hard it does raise some fun questions such as the fine line between pleasure and pain. Between abuse and "permissions."

Those are questions that can only be answered between you and a partner you trust, and the lines between depend solely on you and no one else.

I think some people forget that the pleasure/pain thing is primarily physiological, and not everyone's wiring is the same. Some people have the connection, some don't. Whereas the domination/submission aspect of it tends to more emotional/mental, and doesn't necessarily require pain.
