Copper

Post by Martin Blank » Sat Sep 14, 2013 7:03 am

My wife and I got hooked a couple of months ago on a BBC America show called Copper. It's set the Five Points in New York City in 1864. Kevin Corcoran has returned from fighting in the Civil War to find his wife missing and his daughter dead. Joining (returning to?) the police force, he finds himself trying to care for a young (age 12 or so) prostitute while trying to learn what happened to his own family. He gets caught up in the class divisions of the era, learning of their decadence even as he metes out a justice on the streets unfamiliar to those who follow modern police procedures. Yet he has a determination for finding the truth, as we see several times when he engages the services of a doctor friend to determine the causes of deaths that would otherwise be brushed aside by his colleagues.

It's a fun and unpredictable ride in an historically-accurate setting.

Is there somewhere to catch up on the show? I don't see any episodes on Hulu or BBC America.

Netflix has it available for streaming. Hulu might be getting it (they're going to be adding a bunch of new content soon, though probably with commercials), but I haven't seen the title in the stories I've read.

Oh good Netflix I have. I will put it in my Q now that I am done rewatching The League and The New Black is Orange.

Do what I do. Lock yourself in the bathroom and close your eyes.

Oh, I was going to check this out as imdb's description made it sound very similar to Gangs of New York which I really enjoyed.

I see it's been cancelled after the second season though. Bah. The same thing that broke my heart about Rome.

There is a benefit to that--not having it stretch out too long. Hopefully there won't be an unresolved cliff-hanger at the end of this season.
