Jazz legend Dave Brubeck died today at 91. Brubeck was one of the most influential jazz pianists ever, best known for the song and album Take Five. As long as he was around, American culture seemed a little more refined.
When I write, which I do a lot considering it's a hobby and a significant function of every job I've had since college, I tend to have music on in the background. It's not a great habit--I wouldn't recommend it for your struggling student-aged child for example--but it's always worked well for me. Brubeck's music in particular has always been excellent for this purpose.
Papers, columns, posts here, press releases, copy, corporate outreach...I've produced so many documents with music like this on in the background. For that I owe Brubeck a debt of gratitude.
