Oh, silly me. The medical studies were initially located by someone who is a feminist, and therefore they are invalid. Feminists should know better than to go around making medical studies invalid by locating them. Interestingly, Bullshit did do an episode on diets, where they also showed that they ...

Re: Causes of gene expression - Nature as a product of Nurtu

Deacon, I know from personal experience that it's true, because I am fat. I have food scales and weigh out everything I eat, stringently writing down every calorie, even if I have a cough drop. I have to do this, because if I eat as much as 1000 calories a day, or get lazy and only do an hour of in...

kaiju01 , couldn't that be because people pass their eating habits onto their children? Or parents and children are likely to share an environmental factor that causes both obesity and diabetes? [quote="Deacon";p="644626"]Bullshit. If you wire their mouth shut, they'll die thin. Genetics simply aff...

I think a lot people are confusing what I was trying to say with natural selection. I'm talking about the genes YOU have, if YOUR experience could affect the chances of the genes you're carrying to mutate or be expressed in your offspring. YH , you say you don't know, but your answer sounded pretty ...

That also sounds likely to be a result of natural selection. Or is there some reason that I missed why eating processed foods would directly affect the genes a person was carrying?

I know the topic is debatable, which is why I'm trying to get you people to start talking about it! :)

I don't think it's at all normal to wear glasses in the shower. I've never heard of anyone else who does so. Hence, the confused response you received.

The examples you state are caused by natural selection, not the physical changes in a person's genes during their lifetime. That's another subject entirely.

I'm trying to work out how someone might use the phrase "Cinema is dead," as something other than rhetoric. If you encountered a life form of some sort and named it Cinema before it promptly perished? Or perhaps if you were one of the early sociologists who considered social networks (and possibly a...

[quote="Skorpion";p="643854"]Wearing glasses in the shower is far easier than finding the damn things afterwards. Plus when they steam up, it makes for easier cleaning. There's the small worry of corrosion on the wire repairs to them, but that'll be less of a worry when I switch back to a decent pai...

Causes of gene expression - Nature as a product of Nurture

Question: To what extent does the environment affect the selection of which genes get expressed in one's offspring? To what extent does the environment affect the chance of mutation? Does 'nurture' profoundly affect 'nature'? Genes are physical items, so I imagine that there must be outside forces w...
